FUNCTIONAL TRAINING OF ATHLETES

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING PREPARES AND TEACHES ATHLETES TO PLAY THEIR SPORT.

It teaches athletes how to handle their own body and become the best version of themselves. It incorporates balance and proprioception into training using unilateral exercises. Bilateral exercises under heavy load is dysfunctional for most athletes. Most team sports and skills are performed on one leg. In soccer you kick with one leg, in tennis you hit the ball with one hand, in basketball you dunk from one leg, etc. Functional training trains movements and emphasis is on balance between pushing and pulling upper body strength and between knee dominant and hip dominant lower body strength. Our unique program includes instruction in running technique (linear and lateral), rehabilitation, footwork, speed and agility, explosive power development, muscle flexibility and joint mobility and energy system conditioning.

I'm offering functional training for athletes all age group in the wider area of Split. I cover most individual and team sports (football, basketball, tennis, handball etc.) because the training program is 90% the same for most athletes and sports. The exercise becomes more and more demanding when the basic techniques are mastered.

Areas that are covered during the program:

  • SPEED – Acceleration, deceleration, linear and lateral movement technique, running mechanics, footwork

  • EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH - Olympic lifting, plyometrics, exercise with medicine ball, kettlebell training

  • STRENGTH – Functional approach, focus on upper and lower body and core

  • CONDITIONING – Energy system training for a specific sport

  • FLEXIBILITY - myofascial relaxation of muscles with massage roller, static and dynamic stretching, PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching

  • REDUCING THE RISK OF INJURY – identification and correction of muscular imbalance, stability of the lumbar spine, knee and elbow joint, mobility of the ankle, hip, wrist, shoulder and upper back (thoracic spine) joints
